Austin High has had “yell leaders” leading fans in cheers for a hundred years and then some. Two young men are featured as the Yell Leaders all the way back in the February 1916 Comet. The job became more organized in 1931, when three Red Jackets and three boys from the student body worked in the stands under the supervision of the Red Jacket sponsor. In 1939, the Yell Leaders became their own campus organization, and they took on the modern name of "Cheerleaders" in 1955. Austin High Cheerleaders have been co-ed through much of their history. The size of the cheerleading squad has varied, increasing from a small handful in the early days to nine in 1980, twelve in 1990, and over twenty members in the 2000s.

The earliest recorded Austin High cheer was published for the student body in the April 1898 Comet:

Ra, Ra, Ra, Yes, Yes, Yes!
